Ephesus: A Day Trip by Car from Denizli

· 6 min read · EGE RENT A CAR

Seen Pamukkale and wondering about Ephesus? Here is how to drive from Denizli to Ephesus in a day and add Selçuk and Şirince to your route.

Many travellers who come to Pamukkale want to finish their trip with Ephesus. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ephesus is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Anatolia, home to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. You can visit it as a day trip by rental car from Denizli, or stay a night in Selçuk for a more relaxed plan.

How long is the drive?

Selçuk, the town next to Ephesus, is about 190 km from Denizli city centre, a 2.5–3 hour drive depending on traffic. The route runs via Aydın, mostly on dual carriageway. For a day trip, leave early, ideally around 7–8 am: you will tour in the cooler hours and arrive before the tour buses.

Stops on the way

  • Nysa: A quiet ancient city near Sultanhisar, close to the main road. Ideal for a short break.
  • Aydın: A convenient stop for food and fuel.

Touring Ephesus

Ephesus has two entrances: the upper (South) gate and the lower (North) gate. The ancient street runs downhill from the upper gate, so starting there and walking down to the lower gate is less tiring. To get back to the gate where you parked, use the taxis waiting at the entrances or walk back the same way.

Don’t miss:

  • The Library of Celsus: The symbol of Ephesus; its facade looks best in the morning light.
  • The Great Theatre: A huge theatre that seated around 25,000 people.
  • Curetes Street: The marble street leading down to the library.
  • The Terrace Houses: Roman homes decorated with mosaics and frescoes. They need a separate ticket but are well worth it.

Allow at least 3 hours for Ephesus. There is little shade, so a hat and water are essential in summer. Opening hours and ticket prices can change; check official sources before you go.

Selçuk and Şirince

If you have time after Ephesus:

  • Selçuk: The remains of the Temple of Artemis and the İsa Bey Mosque are in the town centre.
  • House of the Virgin Mary: On the mountain road near the upper gate of Ephesus.
  • Şirince: A stone-house village about 8 km from Selçuk, known for its fruit wines and village breakfasts. Don’t drive into its narrow streets; use the car parks at the village entrance.

Choosing a car

Most of the route is motorway and dual carriageway, so a comfortable mid-size saloon or an SUV is a good choice for the long drive. The round trip is about 400 km; you can find the daily mileage limit on our FAQ page. If you are planning a long route, let us know when you book.
