Laodicea: The Great Ancient City on Denizli's Doorstep

· 5 min read · EGE RENT A CAR

Laodicea is the closest ancient city to Denizli centre. Its colonnaded streets, theatres and church are well worth half a day, and it fits easily into the same day as Pamukkale.

Laodicea on the Lycus (Laodikeia) lies just north of Denizli city centre, right on the road to Pamukkale. Named after Laodice, wife of the Seleucid king Antiochus II, it became one of the richest trading cities of the region in Roman times. It also matters in Christian history: Laodicea is one of the “Seven Churches” named in the Book of Revelation.

With its colonnaded streets, theatres and temples brought back to light by years of excavation, Laodicea is a must-see that many Pamukkale visitors still miss.

How to get there

Laodicea is about 6 km from Denizli city centre, a 10–15 minute drive. Because it sits on the way to Pamukkale, visiting both on the same day is easy. Enter “Laodikeia Antik Kenti” in your navigation app; there is parking at the entrance.

Public transport to the site is limited, so a rental car is the most practical way to visit.

What to see

  • Syria Street: The city’s colonnaded main street. Its re-erected columns give the best sense of how large Laodicea was.
  • The theatres: Laodicea has two theatres, one facing west and one facing north. The view from the west theatre over the Denizli plain towards the Pamukkale travertines is superb.
  • The Church of Laodicea: One of the key early Christian buildings, known for its floor mosaics.
  • Temples and agoras: Information panels along the walking paths explain the religious and commercial life of the city.

The site is spread over a large area; allow 2–3 hours for a relaxed visit.

When to go

There is little shade at Laodicea. In summer, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. In spring the site is especially pretty, with green meadows and wild flowers. Opening hours and ticket prices can change; check official sources before you go.

Combine it with Pamukkale

A good plan is Laodicea in the morning and Pamukkale in the afternoon: the drive between them takes about 15–20 minutes. For the Pamukkale side, see our Pamukkale and Hierapolis day trip and end the day watching the sunset on the travertines.

What to bring

  • A hat, sunscreen and plenty of water
  • Comfortable walking shoes (the ground is stony in places)
  • A camera for the view from the west theatre
