Aphrodisias: A Day Trip by Car from Denizli
· 6 min read · EGE RENT A CAR
Marble sculpture, the monumental Tetrapylon gate and a remarkably preserved stadium: Aphrodisias is one of the finest ancient cities within driving distance of Denizli.
Aphrodisias, near the village of Geyre in the Karacasu district of Aydın, takes its name from Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. Famous in antiquity for its school of marble sculpture, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. It is far less crowded than Pamukkale, which makes a visit all the more enjoyable.
Getting there from Denizli
Aphrodisias is roughly 100 km from Denizli city centre, usually 1.5 to 2 hours by road. The route winds through the hills and valleys west of Denizli, with some twisting sections, so allow time. Check the route in your navigation app before you set off.
Public transport to the site is limited, which makes this one of the best examples of why a rental car pays off.
What to see
The Tetrapylon
The city’s emblem, the Tetrapylon, is a monumental gateway of four rows of columns. Its richly carved capitals and restored façade make it the most photographed spot on site.
The stadium
The stadium of Aphrodisias is regarded as one of the best-preserved ancient stadiums in the Mediterranean world. Most of its seating, built for tens of thousands of spectators, is still in place. Standing in the middle, it is easy to imagine the races of antiquity.
The Sebasteion and the museum
The Sebasteion, dedicated to the Roman emperors, is famous for its reliefs of mythological scenes and emperors. Many of these reliefs, together with works from the city’s sculpture school, are displayed in the Aphrodisias Museum. Starting at the museum helps you make sense of what you will see on site.
The theatre and the Temple of Aphrodite
Don’t miss the theatre on the acropolis hill or the columns of the Temple of Aphrodite that gave the city its name.
Practical tips
- Leave early: the drive and the visit together take most of a day.
- Comfortable shoes: the site is large and the ground uneven in places.
- Water and a hat: shade is limited, especially in summer.
- Up-to-date information: opening hours and ticket prices change; check official sources before you go.
Which car?
Any class of car handles the paved route comfortably. For long-distance comfort, a mid-size sedan is a good choice; for a large family or group, a seven-seat SUV or 8+1 van.
